i was at the farmer’s market this morning with my friend, the fab lulu honolulu.

one of the things that came up was, why do i shop at the market, as opposed to say, wegmans.  wegmans is always open, they never run out of stuff (well, rarely), and they’re so…. convenient.

well, these were my friend’s arguments.  of course he’s right.  wegmans rocks wrt selection – they even have icelandic water (not that i would ever be caught dead purchasing water that’s essentially free), and they carry many of my favorite staples and comfort food.

however, the market is not just about food and sustenance.  it is largely about the experience.  but it is also and perhaps more importantly about supporting my community.  the town that i call my home.  thinking globally and acting locally and all that jazz.  plus, the farmer’s market has amazing people-watching.

it’s a win-win in my opinion.  and so what if the tomato i get at the market is more expensive than the generic, bland tasting “tomato” from who-knows-where at wegmans?  i can see what my purchase will do, that is, support the local farmers and in return my hometown.

speaking of people-watching.  my friend and i got talking about casual sex.  because, after all – we all want sex.  some of us are lucky and get it on a regular basis. the rest, well – there’s always someone on craigslist, right?

we carried on until the lovely, somewhat proper housewife next to me said – as she turned to me: “it’s a lovely weather here, isn’t it?”

and perhaps talking about casual sex, with whom, where, when and how, is not a topic to discuss while sipping coffee and admiring the beautiful community we live in?
